Key West for the Week!

I just returned home from Key West, Florida and what an adventure my boyfriend and I had! I am currently hoping my slight sunburn will fade into a tan over the next few days, but who am I kidding, I’m just going to peel and be my white self again. But the burn was worth it because the sun and beaches were beautiful! I could lay out on the beach all day long and listen to the waves. But of course we did do more than just sit on the beach.
We arrived into Key West International Airport last Saturday and found a taxi to the Airbnb we booked. The place had great reviews, and definitely lived up to expectations. The Airbnb was a condo building right on the beach. The condo itself was pretty small, but had a kitchen for us to cook some of our own meals, and even a patio that we sat out on for breakfast most days. After we settled in a bit, it was already dinner time, so we put on flip flops and strolled down to nearby Duval street to look for a place to eat. The streets were crowded with people of all sorts, families, couples, and street performers. We decided to eat at “Sloppy Joe’s Bar” which was packed with people, so we figured it must be delicious. Of course, we both had to get their “Original Sloppy Joe Sandwich” and it was amazing. The perfect start to vacation, where I like to throw calories out the window. After dinner we continued to wander around Duval street as well as nearby streets and stopped in for a drink at a bar that I can’t remember the name of. But they had a patio overlooking the rest of the street so we could continue to chat and people watch, which was perfect.

We were up early the next morning, so I quickly ran out to a little market a couple blocks from our condo that we had spotted the night before. I grabbed some groceries that would last us the next few days and threw on some eggs and toast when I got back to the condo. We enjoyed our breakfast with coffee while we sat on the back porch and listened to the waves. Then we put on our swimsuits and flip flops, grabbed our books, and headed to the beach. The only other notable event that day was that we took a taxi down to the famous “Southernmost Point” landmark to grab a picture and say we’d been there. Only 90 miles to Cuba from that point! Besides that it was a lounging beach day!

Monday we decided to take a break from the beach and do some of the more historical, tourist sights in Key West. We started with the Ernest Hemingway museum, which was located in his beautiful, old house. It was awesome to walk through the place he spent so much time writing. Afterward we went to the Key West Butterfly conservatory because I love butterflies, and why not? There weren’t many people there so it was really nice; only a few other couples and families walking around the space. We were pretty tired of walking around after that because we had been walking all day so we got a taxi to take us out on the overseas highway. Our driver told us all about the construction of the highway and about some of the other Florida Keys that it connects to. Our driver was a retired history teacher from Georgia, which we could tell by how much he knew and was able to share with us. We got pretty lucky with that! After our drive along the highway we had him drop us off right by Mallory Square. It was packed with street artists, vendors, and food trucks. We had some awesome fish and chips from a food truck and found a bench to sit on where we had an unbelievable view of the sunset. While we ate and watched the sun go down we kept our eye on some of the street performers. One in particular was very outgoing, performing magic tricks, and pulling in assistants from the crowd. I was impressed with how believable it seemed! To end the day we decided that we had to do the ghost walking tour. We had heard about all of the “haunted” tales of Key West before arriving, so we thought we’d give it a try. It was 90 minutes of walking to different, supposedly “haunted” sights and learning about some of the famous people, turned ghosts. It was definitely interesting… But I don’t buy into that kind of thing. Glad we did it though, because a trip to Key West wouldn’t be complete without it I guess!

The incredible sunset from Mallory Square

Tuesday was our last full day in Key West so we decided to do some more beach activities. We went jet skiing and snorkeling and spent the rest of the day lounging! I had an absolute blast on the jet skis. If you have never been, you have to try them! As for the snorkeling, that was much more peaceful. We took a catamaran cruise out to a secluded spot and had about an hour to snorkel and look around at the many different fish. I loved just being in my own quiet world staring peacefully at the fish. We met a few other couples on the catamaran cruise as well. They were from all over the US- Texas, Rhode Island, Missouri. We ended up having a picnic type dinner on the beach with one of the couples, the Andersons from Missouri, after the catamaran. They are both teachers so we chatted with them about that as well as where they went to school, how they met, other vacations they’ve been on, and so on. It was nice to have another couple to talk to! After we said our goodbyes to them, my boyfriend and I grabbed ice cream cones from a nearby shop and strolled along the beach. Then we went for one last swim in the ocean before calling it a night. Our flight left late afternoon so we had a nice easy morning with breakfast on the porch again. All in all, Key West was what I had imagined! Some odd and interesting people, plenty of sights, beautiful beaches and sunsets, and delicious food! Looking forward to our next trip to the Florida Keys, but maybe next time we’ll stay on a different key.

I love road trips! I have been going on road trips for as long as I can remember with my family. I’m talking serious, cross-country road trips. For example, when my family moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Mesa, Arizona we decided to make it into a mega road trip. We went straight up the east coast to Washington DC and New York City then down across through Kentucky and over to Texas and then on to Arizona. What a unique way to see so much of the country! So naturally once I got my license I started taking my own road trips with friends. Though typically they are much shorter than some of the ones I have taken with my family. Though I did drive with a friend from Mesa, AZ to Orlando, FL over the course of four days.
This Spring Break I stayed in AZ but still managed to take a road trip up to Sedona! For any of my road trips I like to have music to set a fun and easygoing mood. All of the songs that I chose for this road trip set a carefree, fun, and excited kind of mood. Some of the songs explain themselves such as “It’s a Beautiful Day,” “Hakuna Matata,” or “Don’t Stop Me Now.” The other songs with less clear titles are either fun to sing along to or simply put a smile on my face. Together this playlist will definitely create anticipation and excitement for any destination.
Outside of songs, though, oftentimes on car rides I enjoy listening to podcasts. Typically I listen to NPR podcasts; my favorite of which is  “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” It’s a news quiz that is not only informative, but it is also very funny. The other two NPR podcasts that I listen to always have really interesting stories that are great if you’re looking to pass the time quickly.

Favorite Quotes from “On the Road”:
“…I saw the entire state of Nebraska unroll before my eyes.”
“The magnificent car made the wind roar; it made the plains unfold like a roll of paper; it cast hot tar from itself with deference – an imperial boat.”
“God knows if she was complaining, but he raced.”
“Now I could feel the road some twenty inches beneath me, unfurling and flying and hissing at incredible speeds across the groaning continent with that mad Ahab at the wheel.”
“When I opened them I saw flashing shadows of trees vibrating on the floor of the car.”
“It was beginning to look like the soft sweet East again; the great dry West was accomplished and done.”
“Pretty soon the redness turned purple, the last of the enchanted rivers flashed by, and we saw distant smokes of Chicago beyond the drive.”

I loved these quotes because they create some amazing imagery. Plains unfolding like a roll of paper, the road flying and hissing underneath the car, and flashing shadows of trees vibrating on the floor of the car. These quotes reminded me of some of the scenes from road trips that I have taken, staring out the window as trees fly by and the sun flashes across my face amidst the trees. Or passing through the desert of Texas into the swamps of Louisiana and Florida, noting the vastly different landscapes. While planes are another amazing view, they don’t give the same opportunity to stare in admiration at the landscape or towns like road trips do.

Here is a video I made of my road trip and time to Sedona! The song choice is because we got engaged in Sedona a year ago, so we revisited our engagement spot and tried a new hike too!

An Airport Adventure

“Approaching station- 44th street and Washington,” the automated voice on the light rail announced as we slowed to a stop. I exited the train and proceeded up the escalator surrounded by only a few other travellers. Whenever I arrive at the airport it is always s mix of emotions, excitement for the adventure to come, a little bit of anxiety that everything is going to run smoothly and on time, and curiosity at where all the other people surrounding me are off to. Of course, this visit to the airport was a little different than most previous ones I have taken because I wasn’t going to actually be flying anywhere. Rather I would be learning more about the airport itself, taking in my surroundings in more detail, and simulating a departure and arrival with my fellow classmates. Keeping that in mind, I stared out at the surrounding city as I waited for and rode the Sky Train to the airport and admired all of the growth that the airport and city has undergone. According to the website Sky Harbor started as a single terminal in 1935 and was even nicknamed “the Farm” because of its rural location. Now it is made up of three terminals and located in the middle of the 6th largest city in the United States with buildings, homes, and businesses in every direction.

Construction on the airport and surrounding city off in the distance.

I reached the airport and was immediately greeted by one of the main art installations that is featured throughout the airport. I thought about why an airport would feature art installations and started to think about the many hours I have spent in airports and how sometimes it is nice to walk around and see more than just families, food, and workers. I met up with half of my class and after waiting and wondering where the other half of the class was, had to be led by an airport staff member to the other half of the class. I couldn’t help but feel amused, because it seems like no matter what your circumstance is at an airport there is always some kind of miscommunication or hiccup in the experience.
One of the many art installations.

We got organized and took off for our departure flight on Delta flight 1546 to Atlanta in Terminal 3. Despite having flown in and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor dozens of times I had never visited terminal 3. We had to take the Sky Train to get there and I was struck by the differences between terminals immediately. This one was white and sparse and had very few people comparatively. The people who were moving around seemed to be mostly older men in suits. I figured businessmen leaving for work trips, since it was a Monday after all. I noticed a variety of staff members walking around. There was a pilot with his briefcase who passed by a security guard, a man in a purple coat offering his help to any traveller who needed it. I also saw a few construction workers as we got back on the Sky Train. The variety of staff members is something that I had never really thought about before watching the “Britain’s Busiest Airport” video. In the video they introduced many staff members who I would have never thought an airport would even have or need. A social worker or animal handlers for example! After they explained their purpose it all makes sense, but when I think airport I think pilots, baggage handlers, and the people who check you in at the desks, not much else. The video definitely helped me to simply notice and appreciate the depth of staff in an airport.

Before leaving Terminal 3 I also noticed that there was no line at the TSA security checkpoint, which is always a welcome site. Watching the TSA Travel Tips you can see how the lines can get caught up if people haven’t been to an airport before or don’t realize many of the rules about liquids, shoes, or other hang-ups.

We made it back to Terminal 4, where we determined that our flight in from El Paso on Southwest 207 had arrived. We travelled down the escalator to baggage claim. There was quite a bit more hustle and bustle down at baggage claim. We saw a few drivers holding up signs with their passengers names on them, a man sleeping on a couch nearby, advertisements for March Madness everywhere, and plenty of people milling around different carousels. Our bags arrived on carousel 6 and once we had “collected” them we caught the Sky Train one last time out to the East Economy lot and just like that we were done with our airport adventure!
